The hike on the well-cleared forest road to the Kührointhütte requires strong legs on the ascent, but you are compensated for the effort with wonderful views of the Watzmann massif. From the Wimbachbrücke, the small bridge across the carpark leads to the Schapbachweg and further up the forest path to the Schapbachalm. It continues directly by the feet of the Watzmannfrau, past a drawn-out bend – also called the ‘Benzinkurve’ – to the Kührointalm. Once arrived at the top at an altitude of 1,420 meters, you are greeted by a gorgeous snow-covered alpine landscape. Ensure you bring your own refreshments, as the Kührointalm is not always open in winter. If there is a well-trodden path in the direction of the Archenkanzel, you should not miss a detour to its nearby viewing platform. Here you are rewarded with one of the most beautiful views of the Königssee and St. Bartholomä that the region has to offer. Take the same route to return to the starting point.
