The Zauberwald was awarded as one of the most beautiful geotopes in Bavaria by the Bavarian State Ministry for Environment, Health and Consumer Protection. Several thousand years ago, about 15 million cubic meters of rock broke loose between Schärtenspitze and Steinberg and fell more than 1,000 m into the valley. There, they piled up as boulders on top of each other and dammed up streams. This is how the charming landscape of the Zauberwald by lake Hintersee was created. Lovers of botanical rarities can discover all sorts of things along the way and are guided by artistically designed boards. Between the rocks covered with lush vegetation, the clear, cool water finds its way. The hiker feels the magic of this landscape, which rightly bears the name “Zauberwald” (“Magic Forest”). From the starting point, the path leads counterclockwise around the lake to the Alte Hinterseer Straße, about 500 m to the right, then again to the right and down the nature trail to the Westermayer footbridge. Now it goes steadily uphill through the Zauberwald over steps and footbridges back to the starting point.
