The Wimbachtal offers an incomparable natural experience. While the parallel valley filled with water to form the Königssee, an impressive debris flow was formed here. The dolomite rocks of the Watzmann and Hochkalter massifs weather to the so-called Gries, which are rock fragments that cover the valley floor in a thick layer. The Gries lies like a sloping plane between the bounding rock walls. During snowmelt and heavy rain, water courses form on the surface, slowly transporting the rock into the valley. Pioneer plants begin to conquer the habitat on the banks, but usually only temporarily. Everything is subject to constant change. The hike into the Wimbachtal is like a journey back in time through a cross-section of geological history. From the start at the National Park Information Centre, the trail leads uphill along the Wimbachweg. For the very rewarding visit to the Wimbachklamm, you need to purchase an entrance coin at the ticket machine. The path either leads through the gorge or past it on the forest road. On a wide, gently ascending hiking trail, you reach the Wimbachschloss mountain inn, formerly a hunting lodge of the Bavarian kings, and continue into the rear Wimbachtal with the Wimbachgries hut.
