The Wimbachtal offers us an incomparable nature experience. While the parallel valley was filled to become the lake Königssee, an impressive stream of rubble arose here. The dolomite rocks of the Watzmann and Hochkalter massif weathered to become the so-called Gries, rock fragments covering the valley in a mighty layer. Like a sloping plain, the Gries lies between the bounding cliffs. During snowmelt and heavy rainfall, streams of water form on the surface, slowly transporting the rocks into the valley. Pioneer plants begin to conquer the habitat at the banks, usually just temporarily.
After passing through the impressive gorge at the entrance to the valley, the path leads moderately steep but steady up past the Wimbachschloß (2-3 hours), formerly a hunting lodge of the Bavarian kings, to the Wimbachgrieshütte (5-6 hours). Altogether, 700 meters of altitude are mastered during this hike on wide gravel paths.
