Silent Night, Holy Night…
The eternal song and its connection to the Ramsau parish

Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht!
Alles schläft, einsam wacht,
Nur das traute hoch heilige Paar.
Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar,
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh‘,
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh‘!

Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht!
Gottes Sohn, o wie lacht,
lieb aus deinem göttlichen Mund,
da uns schlägt die rettende Stund.
Christ, in deiner Geburt!
Christ, in deiner Geburt!

Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht!
Hirten erst kundgemacht,
durch der Engel Halleluja,
tönt es laut von Fern‘ und Nah:
Christus, der Retter, ist da!
Christus, der Retter, ist da!

The Eternal Song has been translated into more than 300 languages and dialects and is a national UNESCO cultural heritage.

The lyricist of the world-famous Christmas carol, Joseph Mohr from Salzburg, spent his first assignment as a priest in Ramsau.

He was born on December 11, 1792, in Salzburg and passed away on December 4, 1848 in Wagrain, Austria. Shortly after his ordination on August 21 in Salzburg Cathedral, Joseph Mohr arrived in Ramsau on August 29, 1815. Salzburg was under Bavarian rule until 1816, and the Ramsau parish was under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Salzburg. The year 1815 brought about changes not only for Joseph Mohr. The Napoleonic Wars had ended, and since 1810, Berchtesgaden had been part of the Kingdom of Bavaria along with Salzburg. These events brought a new order to the land and instilled hope for stability and peace among the people.

In October 1815, Mohr moved on to Mariapfarr in the Lungau region of Salzburg. It was there that he wrote the lyrics to ‘Silent Night, Holy Night’ (‘Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht’) in 1816. In August 1817, he was transferred to Oberndorf near Salzburg.

On Christmas Eve, December 24, 1818, the song was premiered in St. Nicholas Church by Franz Xaver Gruber (composer of the melody) and Joseph Mohr (lyricist).

In 2018, the 200th anniversary was celebrated as a EUREGIO project with various events in the Bergsteigerdorf Ramsau and Austrian communities.
