The historic brine pipeline invites you to take a walk with magnificent views of the mountain panorama of Watzmann and Hochkalter (The walk is barrier free). From 1817 to 1961 the pipeline connected the Berchtesgaden salt mine with the salt works in Bad Reichenhall and its construction was a technical masterpiece at the time. The brine was pumped up to the Söldenköpfl from where it ran through pierced tree trunks, so-called dykes, over the Schwarzbachwacht to Bad Reichenhall
with a gradient of approximately 1%. The water column engine in Illsank, also known as the Reichenbach pump, was the largest mechanical pumping station at the time and can still be viewed at the salt mine today. Along the trail, old tunnels, parts of the wooden pipeline and a display board provide information about the historical facility. Make sure you enjoy the panoramic sun terraces of the restaurants and cafes along the way.
