The Magical Forest

Follow the river upstream, passing by the Gletscherquellen (Glacial springs) and onto the Marxenklamm. This amazing gorge has been formed over thousands of years of water cutting into the underlying rock. At this point you enter the Zauberwald or the well earned name of the magical forest. 

15 million cubic metres of rock fell to the valley from the surrounding mountains  approximately 3500 years ago. It blocked off the whole valley. The water from Hintersee, while searching for a downhill path, formed this fairytale scenery now known as the magical forest. (Zauberwald)

Allow yourself to be captivated by this magical scenery and escape into the magic forest with its lush vegetation. Take some time to relax at the Hintersee, which has attracted many artists over the years, due to its imposing backdrop.

You can return to ramsau via the Wartstein and the pilgrimage church of Kunterweg. This will add about an hour to your trip.

The images of a walk through Zauberwald and Hintersee will remain with you for many a long day!
