Customs and Traditions The customs and traditions in Ramsau are observed and maintained by the locals. We can witness this in particular at festivals and on religious holidays, when many locals turn out in their charming traditional dress.
All year round, events cause the locals to arrive in their splendour- Christmas, New Year, Palm Sunday, Corpus Christi, Weddings, 6th of December, carol singing or Advent. Visitors can often join in with the locals in the various celebrations. The role of such traditions, in particular, religious customs are very important within the village. The spectacular church services and processions are most definitely not just for the tourists but exhibit the close ties of the community to their religion.

The Historical Background Ramsau was an important point on the trading map. It is situated along the path over the Hirschbichl Pass and on to Pinzgau, an area in Austria. Ramsau was divided into four different areas. Ramsau joined into Bavaria along with Berchtesgaden in the reforms in 1818 and established itself as a village. Ramsau became well known to the gentry due to its excellent hunting grounds.

Geography Ramau is a secluded valley within the Berchtesgaden basin. The Watzmann mountain and Hochkalter range are the southern walls and the western Reiteralpe range form a border to Austria while the Latterngebirge form a protection from the north. The river "Ramsauer Ache" flows through Ramsau. This forms the only valley exit, to the east towards Berchtesgaden. The three mountain pass roads of Schwarzbachwacht, Hirschbichl and Hochschwarzeck also form passages out of the village.
